Ajahn Sumedho is the senior Western representative of the Thai Forest Tradition. He became a monk fifty years ago (in 1967), training in Thailand with Ajahn Chah for the first ten years. He helped establish and served as the first abbot of Ajahn Chah’s International Monastery, Wat Pa Nanachat (created in 1975 explicitly for the training of non-Thai students). In 1979, under the auspices of Ajahn Chah, he established Cittaviveka (the Chithurst Buddhist Monastery) in England and served as abbot there until 1984 when Amaravati Buddhist Monastery was established. Ajahn Sumedho remained Amaravati’s abbot until his retirement in November of 2010.

Amaravati recently posted a series of 7 Evening Talks by Luang Por Sumedho given there during an Open Retreat in May of 2017. Many of his senior disciples were present, and the talks deal with the following subjects:

  1. Recognition of the First Noble Truth
  2. Mindfulness and Wisdom
  3. Conditioned and the Deathless Realm
  4. More than Four Elements
  5. Awakened Awareness Is Like This
  6. Generosity, Morality, and the Cultivation
  7. Awareness Itself is Not Conditioned

May all find inspiration in the wisdom expounded by this noble Bhikkhu.
